The Women of HERO Fundraiser Shoot
Based out of Iowa, the Women of HERO is a group for female veterans under the Healing at English River Outfitters (HERO) organization. They host events for female veterans such river tubing, military sexual trauma retreats, appreciation breakfasts, and more to help encourage healing and surround them with a supportive community. I had the honor of being asked to photograph this amazing group of women for a calendar fundraiser. Each of the women I photographed is a disabled veteran and all had a story to tell. What women face in the military is not always easy. Many leave the service broken and lost. These incredible women had the courage to tell their stories in hopes that it may help others as well as themselves.
The words written on their skin is representative of their experience, disability, or feelings that tell their story. Each of the props in the photo represents their time in the service. A bow tie can also be found in each photo in memory of one of the founders of the HERO organization, Chuck “Bowtie” Geertz, who passed in 2019.
The decision to make the images black and white reflects the seriousness of what these women went through and the need for change especially in light of recent events involve female military members. All of the photos will be put into a calendar to raise money to support these women and other veterans heal.
